Review for the day...
Good grief, I've run out of things to talk about. I've racked my brain till it hurt (make the pain stop) and I still can't think of anything else to write. >.< Since I can't think of any other topic, I present.
Tadah! TV review time!
Gungrave is the story about 'Beyond the Grave', a man with missing memories. He is the only thing that stands in the way of the 'Syndicate' and 'Bloody Harry', leader of the group. Upon watching the first episode, one can't help but be confused by the scene playing out before us. Creatures / mutants attacking a girl and a doctor as they are holed up in an armored truck, while a man in a chair sits in the background. As the monsters begin to tear through the metallic hull of the truck, the man awakes, and proceeds to unleash death upon the attackers.
While this intial scene is a bit confusing, do not worry. All will be explained...in half the series. This is where things get a bit slow for my tastes. The entire series is 26 episodes only and a little more than 1/2 of that gets eaten up by a major flashback. Albeit a bit long, it does establish the relationships of all the primary players in our story. We see 'Grave', how he lived, his friends, his loves, and the chain of events which led to the opening scene.
At its core, however, is a story of youth, friendship, loyalty, and a dash of love. Sure its about the mob, guns, and crime but you have to admire the way Japanese can make a show out of any topic.
The series dialog is typical of many anime; more than average number of cheesy lines, but every so often a good piece of dialog makes its way in. This is to be expected though, as with new restrictions in place (I believe a TV series can only be 26 eps at most per season), GunGrave's story doesn't have enough depth to make it more than one season anyway(it was based on a PS2 game which was very short to begin with but very intense to play, so I've heard). Animation is fairly good, rarely do we find any episodes or scenes where the quality degrades suddenly.
All in all, GunGrave was a good series to watch, but not enough to warrant a second sitting. If you like action and drama (and can look past the so-so dialog), I'd recommend this series.
